Global Music Ensemble Baladino at the Hett on April 29
Workshops in Local Schools is Part of World Fest Artists’ Week Long Residency
(LEBANON, Ill., April 21, 2016) — Baladino, a Mediterranean musical group from Israel,
will bring its unique sound to local communities and to McKendree University’s Hettenhausen
Center for the Arts April 25-29. The Hett is hosting the band as the only Illinois
partner in the 10-state Arts Midwest World Fest.
With members hailing from Berlin and Tel Aviv, Baladino’s world music blends everything
from Egyptian darbuka to Armenian duduk, from Ladino classics to rarely heard, centuries-old melodies brought to Israel from
Spain, eastern Europe, Turkey and Arabic countries.
During the week, the band will visit the O’Fallon Rotary Club, Covenant House senior
center and KDHX radio in St. Louis, and middle schools in Cahokia and Highland. The
group will conclude its visit with a free public concert at the Hett on Friday, April
29, at 7:30 p.m.
Baladino is the second Arts Midwest World Fest group to visit the Hett this season.
World Fest presents international musical ensembles in week-long residencies to promote
understanding of and appreciation for cultural diversity.
“The kind of cultural exchange that World Fest creates is an important part of the
Hett’s mission,” said Peter Palermo, director of the Hettenhausen Center. “We’re bringing
talented musicians and educators from the other side of the world and putting them
in touch with members of our community both young and old.”
Baladino will perform at the Hett April 29.
