McKendree’s Chapel Series Begins Sept. 5
Leadership, Service, Hospitality, Common Ground and Diversity are Themes
(LEBANON, Ill., August 29, 2014) — Leadership, service, hospitality, common ground and a diverse community
are the themes of McKendree University’s 2014-2015 Chapel Series, which starts on
Sept. 5. Members of the community are invited to join students, faculty and staff
members to hear challenging speakers at Bothwell Chapel on campus.
Leadership is the topic of the opening service on Friday, Sept. 5 at noon. The guest
speaker is Dr. Deborah Krause, academic dean and professor of New Testament at Eden
Seminary and an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church.
Other keynote speakers are scheduled as follows:
Sunday, Oct. 26, 10 a.m., “Service”: Rev. Jared Evens, a United Methodist pastor in Georgia and a McKendree
graduate who received his call to ministry in missions, will be the guest minister
at the Homecoming chapel service.
Friday, Dec. 5, noon, “Hospitality”: A Lessons and Carols service with Rev. Tom Goodell, directing pastor
of Crossroads United Methodist Church, in Washington, Ill., and music by the McKendree
Concert Choir.
Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, 4 p.m. “Common Ground”: Rev. Maurice J. Nutt, a Redemptorist Catholic priest, is
Director of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana
in New Orleans, where he teaches theology and preaching courses. The Christian Unity
and Martin Luther King Service will also feature the McKendree Gospel Choir.
Wednesday, Mar. 25, 6 p.m., “A Diverse Community”: Rick Kodner of the Jewish Federation will be the guest speaker
at a Jewish Seder Meal, a ritual feast that marks the beginning of Passover.
Wednesday, April 29, noon, “Faculty Reflections”: A Celebration Chapel Service features Dr. Pat Folk, professor
of history and Samuel Hedding Deneen and Charles Samuel Deneen Memorial Chair in Early
American History, who has been part of the McKendree community since 1978. The McKendree
Concert Choir will perform.
