McKendree University Congratulates its Class of 2023 Graduates
(LEBANON, Ill., May 15, 2023) – Members of the Class of 2023 received their diplomas
at three separate ceremonies on Friday, May 12 at the Lebanon, Ill., campus – the
College of Arts & Sciences and School of Education at 10 a.m.; the School of Business
and School of Nursing and Health Professions at 1:30 p.m.; and all postgraduate students
at 4:30 p.m.
The university is conferring a total of 551 degrees - 31 doctoral, 155 master’s, 351
bachelor’s, 14 specialist and four associate degrees – on students who completed their
program requirements in December 2022 and May and July 2023. A total of 103 students
graduated with Latin honors (pending final grades for the spring and summer terms):
18 summa cum laude, 46 magna cum laude and 39 cum laude. Seven of these students completed
the university’s Honors Program. The new graduates represent 30 states and 20 countries
and territories.
“Graduates, you’ve maintained your commitment to your academic journey and you’ve
continued your pursuit of your life’s dreams and visions. Your effort, your determination
and your successes are great and deserving of our celebration today,” said Daniel
C. Dobbins ’81, president of McKendree University. “You fill us with pride for your
accomplishments, you bring us joy for your successful achievement of this academic
milestone, and you always bring us hope that the world will be made a better place
by your contributions to society. You’re ready to make your mark beyond McKendree.”
Two professors retired from the university: Dr. George Fero, professor of education,
and Dr. Roxanne Beard, professor of management. Dr. Fero was awarded the rank of Professor
Emeritus to become the newest lifetime member of the university community.
Peyton Osgood, an Honors Program student from Oak Lawn, Ill., who graduated with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, received the 2023 Technos International Prize.
It is given each year by the Tanaka Ikueikai Educational Trust for outstanding academic
achievement and a commitment to the cause of international understanding. Osgood was
a member of the concert band and wind ensemble for all four years at McKendree, a
UNI 101 peer mentor and was noted to be an intellectual leader on campus. Following
graduation, Osgood plans to move to California to pursue a master’s degree in school
counseling.
Dr. Sara (Trask) Frank ’05, associate professor of communication and winner of the
2022 Emerson Award and the 2023 United Methodist Exemplary Teacher of the Year award,
received the William Norman Grandy Faculty Award from the Alumni Association. It recognizes
commitment to students, the ideals promoted by the university and participation in
the community it serves. Frank has been teaching at McKendree since 2018 and has been
acknowledged for her outstanding teaching, never-ending energy and her joy and enthusiasm.
Frank is the first faculty member to win all three awards in a single academic year.
Additionally, President Daniel Dobbins presented outgoing Board of Trustees chairman
Dan Lett with the Humane Letters honorary degree, the most distinguished award the
university can bestow. The 1991 graduate has served as board chair for eight years.
