Commencement By the Numbers(LEBANON, Ill., May 14, 2016) — McKendree University Class of 2016 graduates received their diplomas during the 176th commencement exercises May 14 at the Lebanon, Ill., campus. Bachelor’s degrees were awarded in the morning and master’s degrees in the afternoon, on an unseasonably brisk and windy day.

New graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing and Health Professions received a congratulatory handshake from Dr. James Dennis, McKendree University president. “You excelled as students, you thrived on change, you performed community service, and you are the most generous class in the history of McKendree,” he told them, citing several examples. “This class has a truly impressive résumé. You have excelled in all facets of collegiate life.”

The university is conferring over 800 degrees at its Illinois and Kentucky campuses in 2016—four doctorates, 18 education specialists, 219 master’s, 566 bachelor’s and nine associate degrees—on graduates who completed their degree requirements in December 2015, and in May and July 2016. One-hundred-fifty-five graduated with honors: 31 summa cum laude, 80 magna cum laude and 51 cum laude. The new graduates hail from 28 states and five countries.

Commencement exercises for the McKendree University campuses in Louisville and Radcliff, Ky., will be held on June 4 at First Christian Church in Elizabethtown, Ky.

The 2016 William Norman Grandy Faculty Award for outstanding commitment to the university and its students was given by the Alumni Association to Dr. John Watters, chair of the School of Business and associate professor of economics.

“Two of Dr. Watters’ greatest strengths as a teacher are his ability to break complex concepts into small chunks that students can understand, and integrating real-life business examples into his teaching,” said Maria Page, Alumni Association president, in her introduction. “He is highly accessible to students and colleagues, always willing to answer a question or lend a hand.”

Professor Emeritus status was awarded to two retiring faculty members for their outstanding service, dedication and leadership. Dr. Frank Spreng, professor of economics, taught at McKendree for 29 years, chaired the Business Division for 12 years, developed the MBA program and served as its first and only director until this year. David Ottinger, professor of art, joined the faculty in 1978 and for the past 38 years became synonymous with McKendree’s art program, teaching nearly every course in the department.
