President's Award for Professional Excellence Goes to Jennifer Miller
(LEBANON, Ill., May 7, 2020) — Jennifer Miller puts her heart and soul into her job
as McKendree University’s assistant dean for student success and co-coordinator of
the University 101 program.
“Like so many on our staff, she has gone above and beyond the requirements of her
position,” said President Daniel Dobbins, who announced Miller as the recipient of
the seventh annual President’s Award for Professional Excellence. It recognizes full-time
employees who demonstrate leadership, distinguished accomplishment, performance beyond
the call of duty, creativity and innovation, and outstanding service to the university.
The award was given during a recent staff and faculty gathering held online.
Those who nominated Miller pointed out her work ethic, compassion, leadership, service
to the university and the community, and numerous examples of helpfulness to students
and other employees. She sets students up for achievement and growth not only academically
but also personally, responding to their needs and making herself available in the
advising center and by phone or text. Colleagues often turn to her as a resource and
sounding board who will listen and answer their questions. She supports the university’s
initiative to provide food and clothing to students in need and participates in its
annual Christmas project to assist local families.
Miller began her McKendree career as a student worker on campus in 2000, while pursuing
a bachelor’s degree in sociology. In 2005 she went to work as the associate registrar
for curriculum. She later became the director of student success and retention, and
finally the assistant dean for student success and the co-coordinator of University
101, a course that eases new students’ transition into college. In addition, she serves
on several committees and for many years has helped to coordinate the university’s
commencement ceremonies.
The Highland, Ill., resident received a master’s degree in educational studies from
McKendree. She continued her education while employed full time, earning an education
specialist degree from North Central University.
Jennifer Miller received the 2020 President’s Award for Professional Excellence.
