Graduate Assistant - Counseling Services

McKendree University seeks a motivated and energetic individual to join the Counseling Services Department as a part-time Graduate Assistant. This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a collegiate counseling setting while supporting student mental wellness initiatives. The position includes a tuition discount and an hourly wage at minimum wage rates.  This position will work approximately 20 hours per week.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work under the supervision of experienced counseling professionals while gaining valuable experience in counseling services and student mental health initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mental Wellness Outreach: Assist in developing and delivering mental wellness presentations and campus outreach programs to promote mental health awareness and support within the student community.
  • Client Intake and Assessment: Conduct intake procedures for new clients, administer and score assessments, and assist in matching clients with appropriate counselors.
  • Appointment Scheduling: Manage client scheduling, ensuring efficient appointment booking and maintaining an organized calendar for the Counseling Services Department.
  • Document Management: Dispose of confidential materials securely as required and upload relevant documents to the electronic medical record system accurately and promptly.
  • Departmental Support: Contribute to the goals of the Counseling Services Department and Student Affairs Office through various support tasks as directed by the Director of Counseling Services.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and acceptance into a McKendree University master’s program is required, preferably in counseling, psychology, or a related field.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a compassionate and respectful approach to handling sensitive information.
  • Basic understanding of mental health issues and wellness strategies.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail, particularly in managing confidential information.
  • Proficiency in using electronic systems or willingness to learn the university’s electronic medical record system.
  • Ability to function autonomously and as a member of a team
  • Strong organizational, presentation, oral and written communication skills necessary for working collaboratively and cooperatively with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
  • Proficient computer skills are necessary.

FLSA Category: Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $15.00 - $15.00 / hour

Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions and department budget.
