About Shelly
Dr. Shelly Lemons, Associate Professor of History, joined the McKendree faculty in
2010. Dr. Lemons received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Central Methodist
College (now Central Methodist University), in Fayette, Missouri, and a Master of
Arts in History from Missouri State University, in Springfield, Missouri. In 2004,
she completed a doctoral degree in history from Oklahoma State University, in Stillwater,
Oklahoma.
Dr. Lemons taught at community colleges in Utah and in Missouri for ten years before
coming to McKendree University. She is actively engaged in teaching and scholarship,
with a primary focus on women and gender issues. Her manuscript, Down on First Street:
Prostitution in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is forthcoming. Other projects currently in progress
include a study of courthouse weddings and attitudes about marriage as well as manuscript
project on Oklahoma women, the Great Depression, and the Dust Bowl.
Dr. Lemons is also actively engaged in community and professional organizations. She
serves on the Board of Directors of Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice. She
is also part of the executive council and a Vice President of the Southwestern Historical
Association.
