Two Students Work Exhibited at Varsity Art XVI
Artwork on Display through March 29
Lebanon, Ill. — Art majors Bradley Wright and Megan Pea, seniors at McKendree University,
were chosen to exhibit two of their works at “Varsity Art XVI,” a multimedia exhibition
featuring student works from 20 Missouri and Illinois regional colleges and universities.
Students were nominated by a faculty member from each institution. This annual event,
sponsored by Art St. Louis, is curated by professors from the participating colleges
and universities. Designed as a collaborative project, the students work together
on all aspects of the exhibition. This year’s exhibit presents 74 artworks in a vast array of media, including works
in ceramics, collage, digital media, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking,
sculpture, textiles, and more.
Wright’s works, titled “Illinois Abstract III” and “Illinois Abstract IV,” are fluid
acrylics on canvas. He explained in his artist statement, “My work is a mere opposition
of myself, regarding size. I am quiet, so the larger my work is the more of me it
shows.”
Pea's exhibits include “The Grey Matter” and “Center,” two acrylic paintings on board.
“The subject of my work is color, and how we perceive it,” explained Pea. “I use colors,
textures, and geometric shapes, juxtaposing them in a way that draws attention to
their interactions. Even though I put a lot of planning into my paintings, I never
really know what’s going to happen until I put the color down. Sometimes the unexpected
happens, and I’m forced to re-evaluate my original idea, taking the painting in a
new direction.”
A FREE opening reception will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. in
the Art Saint Louis Gallery at 555 Washington Ave. in St. Louis, Mo. The exhibit runs
March 9 through 29, 2012. Gallery hours are Monday 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and
