Young People’s Concert on Feb. 12 Presents ‘Storytime!’

Lebanon, Ill. — The McKendree University Music Department will host “Storytime!", a fun and imaginative celebration of music on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts on campus.

Geared toward children from pre-kindergarten through third grade, the multi-arts Young People’s Concert will present a wide selection of classic children's stories portrayed in narration, song and drawings.

The one-hour program will feature instrumental favorites, including Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," George Kleinsinger's "Tubby the Tuba" featuring McKendree associate faculty member Troy Marble on tuba, and a shortened arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." The Chamber Choir, directed by Dr. Phillip Wilhelm, will present "Mother Goose Madrigals,” a collection of popular children's songs, and "De Animals A'Comin." The concert band, under the direction of David Boggs, will conclude with music from "Aladdin" or “The Incredibles."

After the concert, children are encouraged to stay and make a little music themselves by singing karaoke, creating shakers or trying various instruments. Animal crackers and juice will be served.

Admission is $3 per person. Reservations are not required but highly recommended. Reserve tickets online at www.mckendree.edu/ypc and pay by cash or check on the morning of the concert. No ticket orders will be taken by phone. Seats are sold first come, first served.

In addition to the public performance, the McKendree Music Department will host local school groups for four shows on Feb. 9 and 10. David Boggs, director of bands, said that attendance at this popular annual event has grown from a small audience of 40 eight years ago to over 2,600, including these four school performances and two Young People’s Concerts presented in the fall.
