McKendree Debate Team Finishes Second at Loyola
Lebanon, Ill. — The McKendree University debate team finished in second place and
took home eight awards at Loyola University on Sept. 27-29. Six colleges and universities,
including Purdue University, attended the tournament. Representing McKendree were
seniors Lucas Barker, Sarah DeBruyckere, and Amanda Walker; sophomores Rodney McBride
and Quinn McRoberts; and first-year Mary Makarishcheva.
At the first half of the tournament, Barker and DeBruyckere went 4-1. After receiving
a bye in quarterfinals, they beat Cedarville University on the topic of regulating
banks. They lost in finals to another Cedarville team. Barker took top speaker, while
DeBruyckere took third place. In the junior division, the team of Makarishcheva and
McBride posted a perfect 5-0 record and finished as semifinalists.
At the second half of the tournament, all three McKendree teams went 3-2 in prelims.
The team of Barker and DeBruyckere, as well as the team of McRoberts and Walker, finished
as quarterfinalists. Makarishcheva and McBride finished as octofinalists after being
advanced over by McRoberts and Walker. Barker took second place speaker.
The McKendree speech and debate team will compete at Crowder College in Neosho, Mo.,
on Oct. 5.
