McKendree Debaters Take Second Place at Wheaton College

Lebanon, Ill. — The McKendree University debate team took second place in debate sweepstakes at Wheaton College and had two teams advance to elimination rounds. Eight colleges and universities attended Wheaton College’s Hollatz Debates, including Notre Dame, Purdue and Loyola University.

Representing McKendree were junior Amanda Walker; sophomore Caleb Vines; and first-years Christin Austin, Cam Cripe and Quinn McRoberts.

In the open division of parliamentary debate, Walker and a debater from Cedarville University went 4-4, just missing the break to elimination rounds.

In the junior division of parliamentary debate, McRoberts and Vines posted a 7-1 record. They lost in quarterfinals to Cedarville. Additionally, the team of Austin and Cripe went 5-3, before losing in quarterfinals to Notre Dame University. McRoberts was recognized as the seventh best speaker in the division.

The McKendree University debate team will next compete at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., Feb. 15-17, while the individual events team will attend a tournament at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo.
