Gallery Talk: Corsets and the Evolution of the Female Silhouette
Women’s History Month Event at the McKendree Gallery of Art
Lebanon, Ill. — “The Evolution of the Western Female Silhouette: aka The Corset Talk,”
will be presented at the McKendree Gallery of Art on Monday, March 4, from 4 p.m.
to 6 p.m. The gallery is located at 224 West St. Louis St. in Lebanon, Ill.
The interactive presentation by Susan Handler addresses 500 years of women’s history
as seen through the manipulation and control of their bodies. Audience members will
be invited to participate in hands-on demonstrations of historical undergarment reproductions.
Handler uses the arts to educate, investigate and communicate social cultural, gender
topics, government policies, and humanitarian and environmental issues. An interdisciplinary
thinker with a background in art history and costumes, she was on the costuming staff
for the Boston Ballet’s recent production of “The Nutcracker Suite.”Her feminism foundation
led to the development of “The Corset Lecture,” which she has presented at The Art
Institute of New York City and colleges throughout the country.
