‘Somewhere in Between’ Opens at the Hett Center on Feb. 28

McKendree Theater Department Play Features Many Local Students

Lebanon, Ill. — Meet Jasper. He’s 29, single, stuck in a dead-end job and desperately searching for something to make his life worthwhile. “Somewhere in Between” is his story, told in ten scenes that unfold against the backdrop of the incessant motion of New York City.

The McKendree University Theater Department production of the play by Craig Pospisil opens on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m., and continues on March 1 and 2 at 7:30, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, March 3. The show will be performed at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts at 400 N. Alton Street in Lebanon, Ill. General admission seating is free.

Tyler Campbell, a senior from Trenton, Ill., plays the role of Jasper. As he moves through his life, Jasper encounters a wide variety of people—some of whom may be able to help move him out of his “in-between” state and into the rest of his life. There are those at his job, where he takes complaint calls for a television network: a woman he meets in an elevator (senior Kali Sabo from Hoyleton, Ill.); Chris, the self-appointed expert on women (first-year student Tyler Jewell from Granite City, Ill.); his boss, Geraldine Sanders (senior Allie Stevens from Carterville, Ill.); and Mary, a woman who might be interested in him (senior Shayna Dixon from Alton, Ill.).

As Jasper tries to figure out his life, he meets various people on the streets, shops, homes and restaurants of New York. They include Holly, a bookstore clerk (sophomore Rebecca Blake from Branson, Mo.), bookstore customers Valerie (first-year student Madi Scace from Columbia, Ill.) and Robert (senior Darren Meeker from Newton, Ill.), a lost tourist (sophomore Dawn Schmid from Columbia, Ill.), a homeless man panhandling on the subway (junior Nathaniel Luckett from Freeburg, Ill.), a construction worker (first-year student Aaron Vidad from South Elgin, Ill.), an aspiring actress (first-year student Sharon Herath from Mossville, Ill.), a lawyer (sophomore Natalie Van Booven from Maryland Heights, Mo.), and some very interesting folks at a restaurant (junior Rachael Valbert from Granite City, Ill.; senior Tim Barker from O’Fallon, Ill.; and first-year student Felicia Mathis from Mount Carmel, Ill.)

Working behind the scenes to make sure the show runs smoothly are first-year students Julia Surdyke (Festus, Mo.), stage manager; Dakota Reed (West Frankfort, Ill.), light board operator; and Evan Bosaw (Troy, Ill.), sound design; sophomore Nate Hunt (Harrisburg, Ill.), deck manager; and senior Lisa Zeller (Schaumburg, Ill.), backstage crew.
