Global Awareness Week on Campus, March 21-28

(LEBANON, Ill., March 11, 2015) — Global Awareness Week at McKendree University will host discussions about international issues and current events, and combine some fun with Zumba on the quad, food sampling, flag painting and more.

From March 21 to 28, the focus will be on politics, social justice, religion, ethnicity, economic disparity, social justice and diversity. Led by Campus Ministries and the Lyn Huxford Center for Community Service, events are a collaboration co-sponsored by several departments and student organizations. Most are open to the public. Highlights will include:

Sunday, March 22: “Global Views of Human Rights in the United States,” by Dr. Brian Frederking, professor of political science, Piper Academic Center (PAC), Room 222, 7 p.m.

Monday, March 23: International food sampling outside Ames Dining Hall, 11 a.m.; international student panel discussion, PAC Room 222, 3 p.m.; “Global Economic Freedom,” by Dr. Frank Spreng, professor of economics, and students, PAC 22, 7 p.m.

Tuesday, March 24: Student volunteers will Lebanon Elementary School visitors in crafts, games, puppetry and puzzles designed to teach cooperation and cultural diversity as the Melvin Price Convocation Center gym becomes a “Peace Museum” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; “Global Environmental Issues,” by Dr. Duane Olson, professor of religious studies, and the Environmental Studies Seminar students, PAC 222, 7 p.m.; a domestic violence simulation by the Sociology Department, PAC lounge, 8 p.m.

Wednesday, March 25: Fresh Food Fundraiser for Project Peanut Butter, PAC foyer; “Exploring Global Poverty,” PAC 222, noon; Jewish Seder Meal, Circuit Riders room in Bothwell Chapel, 6 to 7:30 p.m.; “Why Cover,” a conversation led by Campus Ministries, PAC lounge, 8 p.m.

Thursday, March 26: “Global Health and Humanitarian Aid” discussion, PAC 222, part one at 11:50 a.m., part two at 3:30 p.m.; a film, “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women,” new residence hall fireplace lounge, 5 p.m.; McKendree “Share Your Story,” an original production by the Theatre Department, Hettenhausen Center, 7:30 p.m.

Friday, March 27: “Unaccompanied Minors, Human Trafficking and Immigration” discussion, PAC 222, noon; Zumba on the quad, 3 p.m.; McKendree “Share Your Story,” the Hett, 7:30 p.m.
