McKendree Debaters Win at Study Break

Lebanon, Ill. — McKendree University closed out the finals of Webster University’s Study Break tournament taking first and second place in the junior varsity division, as well as top speaker. McKendree students competed against Webster University and St. Louis Community College.

Participating were senior Chris Polanc; junior Sarah Brown; and sophomores Lucas Barker, Alex Cunningham and Amanda Walker.

In the junior division, Barker and Cunningham posted a 4-0 record to win the tournament. The team of Brown and Polanc went 3-1, taking second place. Polanc was the top speaker, while Brown, Cunningham and Barker were second, third and fourth, respectively. In the novice division, the hybrid team of Walker and Corinne Maloy (of Belleville East) went 2-2 to finish ninth.

Currently, McKendree has two teams ranked in the top National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence top ten: Brent Nicholson and Ben Reid (third), as well as Ian Reynolds and Brad Thomas (sixth).

McKendree students will compete at Western Washington University on Jan. 14 to 16.
