Global Awareness Week on Campus, April 2-7
(LEBANON, Ill., March 21, 2018) — “Travel; the World” is the theme of the 2018 Global
Awareness Week at McKendree University, April 2-7. Organized by the Center for Faith
and Spirituality and the Lyn Huxford Center for Community Service (CCS), the week
is an annual collaboration by faculty, staff and students with special events, speakers
and activities to promote greater awareness of cultural diversity and global issues.
“This year, our keynote panel focuses on the empowerment of women and will feature
three of our own community members,” said Colleen Smyth, CCS program coordinator.
“We are also excited about the launch of a project called ‘Humans of McKendree,’ featuring
pictures and stories of students in our community, that will be launched both on campus
and online.”
Many activities are open to the public. Highlights will include:
Monday, April 2: Food trucks in the circle drive, noon to 2 p.m.; “Beyonce and Wonder Woman” keynote
panel, Holman Library, 5 p.m.
Tuesday, April 3: Tree planting for Holocaust Remembrance Day, front lawn, noon; “Europeans Emigrate
to Africa: A History of Mediterranean Migration” presentation by Dr. Aurelie Capron,
associate professor of Spanish, Piper Academic Center (PAC), Room 222, 12:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 4: “Vietnam: The Good, the Bad and the Insane Traffic” brown bag discussion, PAC 222,
noon; “Racial Micro Aggressions: What Are You Trying to Say?” in Holman Library, 3:30
p.m.; Jewish Seder meal, Circuit Riders Room in Bothwell Chapel, 5 p.m. ($5; reservations
required); “The Book of Jonah” discussion, Hettenhausen Center for the Arts, 7:30
p.m.
Thursday, April 5: Yoga on the quad, 9 a.m.; native drumming, Eisenmayer Hall, noon; “Clinica de Migrantes”
film, PAC 222, 7 p.m.
Friday, April 6: “Understanding North Korea” presentation by Dr. Brian Frederking, professor of political
science, PAC 222, noon.
