Feed Your Mind: Six Short Talks at The Hett’s Idea Lab on March 7

(LEBANON, Ill., December 9, 2016) - The Idea Lab will feature six informative, inspirational 12- to 16-minute talks at McKendree University’s Hettenhausen Center for the Arts on March 7, 2017. Modeled after the popular TED Talks (technology, entertainment and design), “the goal of the Idea Lab is to educate, inform and entertain,” said Peter Palermo, director of the Hett. “We’re trying to create an environment where information, creativity and performance combine to deliver a fresh and compelling evening of talks.”

Admission is $5 for general admission seating and free for McKendree University students. Here is the line-up:

  • What Is The One Amazing Thing You Were Born To Do? Author, TEDx presenter and workshop leader Steve Olsher helps you identify your strengths and limitations in order to cultivate a life of purpose, conviction and contribution.

  • Six Things to Do at a New Job. Rachel Elson, assistant managing editor at Money Magazine, offers advice on negotiating a salary, saving money, taking advantage of freebies, becoming invaluable and learning from others.

  • Hierarchies and Networks. Political science professor Brian Frederking presents a unique analysis of the presidential election and the current divisions in our country, according to those who prefer hierarchy and are threatened by networks, and vice versa.

  • Battling Unconscious Bias. Learn the common vocabulary of bias and how it affects our perceptions, decisions and interactions, from software developer Neem Serra.

  • The Talk: And I’m Not Talking About Sex! A non-threatening, fun yet challenging conversation about race with Saint Louis University High School faculty member Danielle Harrison.

  • The Creative Game of Life. Theatre educator Tress Kurzym helps you assess your “CQ,” or creative quotient, and discuss the importance of 21st century skills.
