McKendree Students Represent India at AMUN Conference

Two Seniors Receive Outstanding Delegate Awards

(LEBANON, Ill., December 3, 2019) — McKendree University students played the role of delegates from India at the American Model United Nations (AMUN) conference in Chicago from Nov. 23-26. Students from more than 75 colleges and universities representing 110 countries participated in the conference.

McKendree seniors Cole Nordmann and Kyle Nordmann each won an Outstanding Delegate Award in First Committee—for the fourth year in a row. It is the first time McKendree students have won an award at this conference for four consecutive years.

Others students representing India at the AMUN conference included Haylee Christ (General Assembly), Scott Anderson and Logan Spaeth (Second Committee), Katherine Gemmingen (Third Committee), Caden Owens (Economic and Social Committee), Cameron Nollman (International Telecommunication Union), Justin Fausz (Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice), and Rebecca Postula (International Court of Justice).

Students tackled a variety of topics at the conference, including terrorism, humanitarian assistance, nuclear disarmament, migration, the rights of children, the rights of indigenous peoples, eradicating poverty, cybersecurity, human trafficking and the gender-related killing of women and girls.

Model UN educates students about diplomacy, global policy, international issues, debate and public speaking. Students take on the role of diplomats, representing nations from across the world and participating in simulated UN committee sessions. In 2020, McKendree University will celebrate its 50th anniversary of participation in Model UN. For more than 40 years, the university has hosted an annual conference on campus for local high schools; it is one of the longest-running Model UN conferences in the country.

On April 15, human rights activist and writer Ishmael Beah will speak at the conference and also as part of the Hettenhausen Center’s Distinguished Speaker Series. McKendree alumni who participated in Model UN are encouraged to return to campus for a reception that evening before the speaker presentation.
