'Into the Streets' Volunteer Day at McKendree University on Aug. 29

(LEBANON, Ill., August 19, 2015) - McKendree University students will participate in a volunteer day called “Into the Streets” as part of New Student Orientation on Saturday, Aug. 29 Approximately 450 incoming students will participate in service to local communities from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a meeting at the Melvin Price Convention Center on campus to assign each student to one of about 30 sites in Lebanon, Highland, Belleville, East St. Louis and St. Louis. Activities will include working with the elderly, mentally disabled, homeless and international populations, as well as hands-on projects for community beautification and restoration. Organizations to benefit will include Cedar Ridge Residential and Rehabilitation Center, the NICE Foundation, Family Living Center, Christian Activity Center, Gateway Greening, International Institute of St. Louis and the Lebanon Garden Club.

“Into the Streets” is part of the New Student Orientation program for incoming students, coordinated by the university’s Lyn Huxford Center for Community Service. “We hope that the students will build relationships though their service and also learn about the help they can provide to the community and opportunities for continued service,” said Jessica Trout, program coordinator.
