2013 Awardees are Recognized as Problem Solvers and Civic Leaders
Lebanon, Ill. — Jessica Tieman, a McKendree University senior from Lincoln, Ill.,
is one of 181 inspiring college and university students from 36 states to be chosen
a 2013 Newman Civic Fellow. The award recognizes students for their spirit and dedication
in working to find solutions for the challenges that face their communities.
Tieman is a history and English double major in the university’s honors program. A
Community Service Scholar and a four-year member of the McKendree Community Action
Team, she has volunteered hundreds of hours of service and organized dozens of events.
She co-coordinates McKendree’s service program at the Family Living Center, a transitional
housing shelter in East St. Louis for homeless women and children. She is a senior
senator and student counselor in the Student Government Association, president of
the local chapter of the Sigma Tau Delta National English Honors Society, and treasurer
of the McKendree Young Feminists.
According to a press release issued by the Campus Compact, a coalition of 1,200 college
and university presidents, “through service, research, and advocacy, Newman Civic
Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves,
the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.
“Jessica has successfully blended academics and co-curricular activities into a well-rounded
educational experience,” said Dr. James Dennis, McKendree University president.
“These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic
leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and
does—play in building stronger communities,” notes Campus Compact President Maureen
Curley.
Newman Civic Fellow Awards are made in memory of Dr. Frank Newman, a founder of Campus
Compact, who dedicated his life to creating systemic change through education reform.
They are made possible through the support of the KPMG Foundation. List of all 2013 Newman Civic Fellows.
