McKendree Political Science Professor Honored for Excellence in Teaching
(LEBANON, Ill., November 9, 2018) — A dedicated and rigorous instructor who molds
his students into complex thinkers is McKendree University’s 2018 recipient of the
Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Brian Frederking, professor of political
science, is among 100 St. Louis educators honored for their outstanding contribution
to the teaching profession and to their students. Recipients are chosen by their institutions’
top administrators.
The 1990 McKendree graduate, a resident of Okawville, Ill., has taught a wide range
of political science courses at the university since 1998. An expert on the United
Nations Security Council and global governance and security, he is an accomplished
scholar who has published four books to date and numerous articles, often in collaboration
with his students.
“He has a knack for identifying nascent scholars and mentoring them through the research
process,” said Dr. Alan Alewine, associate dean for curriculum. “Students respect
him immensely. He is well known as a successful mentor to political science majors
who wish to attend graduate school. Brian takes very seriously his obligation to nurture
students in their growth as responsible citizens.”
In 2011, Frederking received the university’s United Methodist Church Board of Higher
Education Exemplary Teacher Award for teaching excellence, concern for students and
service beyond the classroom. He has chaired the Faculty Senate several times and
has served on many committees, including the College of Arts and Sciences Faculty
Evaluation Committee, and the Contract, Renewal, Promotion and Tenure Committee.
