Two McKendree University Students Receive Phi Eta Sigma Scholarships

(LEBANON, Ill., July 26, 2024) – The Phi Eta Sigma National Board of Directors recently announced the Founders Fund scholarship recipients for the 2024-2025 academic year. Two McKendree students, senior Sonia Halabi and junior Benjamin Anderson, were among this year’s recipients. Recipients had to meet the necessary criteria of involvement in Phi Eta Sigma and include a high scholastic record in order to qualify.

Halabi was awarded the prestigious James E. Foy-John W. Sagabiel Undergraduate Scholar of the Year while Anderson received the Lois Edwards Alexander Undergraduate Scholarship.

A resident of South Barrington, Ill., Halabi is majoring in sociology with a criminal justice emphasis. She is involved in not only Phi Eta Sigma but also Alpha Kappa Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Gamma Mu, Lambda Pi Eta, the Honors Council and the Honors Program at McKendree. Additionally, she is a member of the women’s bowling team, the concert choir and chamber choir, Rotaract Club and several other student groups on campus.

A resident of Wetaskiwin in Alberta, Canada, Anderson is majoring in business administration and is a member of the men’s hockey team. He was recently nominated as co-president of McKendree’s Phi Eta Sigma chapter for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Since 1940, more than $7 million scholarships have been awarded to Phi Eta Sigma members. The Founders Fund currently awards three Scholar of the Year awards, six graduate student scholarships, 37 undergraduate student scholarships and additional scholarships to Phi Eta Sigma undergraduate or graduate members each year.
