girl talking to counselorFilling out and submitting your admissions application can seem confusing or complicated. It might even feel overwhelming knowing that your application will be one of hundreds that a college receives. Your admissions applications are highly important and allow you to show what kind of student you are and who you are as a person. Here are 5 tips we suggest following to make sure you stand out on your application:

Class History and Grades Achieved

Colleges like to see you enjoy a challenge by taking slightly more difficult classes than the average. If you took challenging courses in your high school career, it’s important to list them on your college admissions along with your corresponding grades. This doesn’t mean you need straight As, as long as your admissions prove that you tried your best. Your hard work appears impressive to big colleges; they only wish to know that you are ready for this next step and willing to do the work. Don’t stress! If grades are not your strong point, there are still four other things that can help you stand out.

Early Applications Submissions

Early applications and submission are other things you can do to stand out! As Crimson Education says, early applications look good to colleges because they demonstrate your commitment and determination and reflect your character. Early applications also stand out more since they prove to the college that you are interested in attending that school. Sometimes, if you submit an earlier application, you will become a top-priority consideration.

Well-Written and Thought-Out Personal Statements

The personal statement portion of your admissions is your chance to truly show colleges who you are as a person and not just a student. Your characteristics and personal experiences are equally as valuable as your past performances! Colleges like to better understand who you are to get an idea of how you will fit in on campus. Letters of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation are another great way to showcase your achievements and personality; most colleges request you have at least one. These letters can come from your employer, coworker, teacher, professor, or whomever you trust can write you an amazing recommendation! If your letter is from your teacher, then it’s wise to get it from a teacher who is active in the field you wish to major in since it highlights that you’re dedicated to that field!

Extracurricular and Volunteer Activities and Experiences

Lastly, any extracurriculars and volunteer activities you’ve participated in look super impressive to colleges. In fact, studies show that “49% of colleges surveyed regard students’ extracurricular activities as considerably important.” They enjoy seeing you involved in hobbies and activities outside your academic career. By showing your college that you actively participate in a handful of activities, you also demonstrate that you will be an active and positive member of the college community.
