Dr. Greenfield Named Professor Emeritus
The newest lifetime member of the University community is Dr. John Greenfield, who
was granted Professor Emeritus status at the May 13 commencement ceremony.
Throughout his 33-year career at McKendree, the professor of English distinguished
himself not only as an excellent teacher but also as a prolific scholar and dedicated
leader among his peers. He chaired the Division of Languages, Literature, and Communication
from 1996-1999, and the renamed Division of Humanities from 2012-2015. He was a long-standing
director of the Honors Program, faculty advisor to the Literary Interest Society and
the Sigma Tau Delta honor society for English majors. In 2003, he received the United Methodist Exemplary Teacher Award.
He has written or edited more than 25 articles, literary biographies or reviews, and
given more than 50 presentations to professional audiences. He continues to produce
scholarly papers, earning second place recently in the prestigious Keatsshelly Memorial
Association Essay Contest.
Dr. Greenfield will continue to teach on a part-time basis next year.
